PPF care: how to wash and maintain paint protection film

This is the care sheet we give every PPF customer at pickup: when you can wash it, what’s normal while the film cures, and the few things that can actually hurt it. Film installed somewhere else? The same rules apply.

After installation

The first few weeks

New film needs time to dry out and bond to the paint. Go easy on it now and it protects your paint for years.
  1. First 2 weeks

    Don’t wash it yet

We want the glue to fully grab the paint before any soap or water pressure gets near an edge. Skip every kind of wash for 2 weeks. If a bird hits it, dab it off gently with a damp microfiber and leave the edges alone.

  2. First few weeks

    A little haze is normal

You may see some moisture, a slight haze, or faint marks under the film. That’s leftover install solution. Leave it alone and it evaporates out on its own, faster on warm, sunny days.

  3. Weeks 1 to 2

    Come back for your check-up

Book a check-up with the shop that installed your film 1 to 2 weeks after install. Ours is at no charge: we look over every edge and panel, and if anything needs a touch, that’s when we take care of it.

Everyday care

How to wash a car with PPF

  • Pre-soak, then hand wash. Foam or rinse off the loose dirt first. Then wash with a pH-neutral car soap (we use CARPRO Reset) and a soft wash mitt, using two buckets (one soap, one rinse) with a grit guard so the mitt stays clean. Dry with a clean microfiber.
  • Keep the pressure washer back. At least 3 feet from the film, always moving, never aimed at an edge.
  • Let heat heal light scratches. Swirls and light scuffs in the top layer fade away in the sun or with warm water poured over them.
  • Wipe off bugs and droppings soon. They can stain the film if they bake on. A bug remover that’s safe on film and a soft microfiber take care of it, and a ceramic coating over the film makes them wipe right off.
  • Clean the edges gently. If dirt or wax collects along a film edge, dip a cotton swab in 70% isopropyl alcohol and wipe away from the edge, never into it.
  • Matte film? Keep it matte. Use soaps and sprays made for matte finishes. Wax, polish, and glossy sealants can leave shiny patches.

What to avoid

Seven ways people damage film

  • Washing in the first 2 weeks

The glue is still grabbing the paint. Water and soap can creep under an edge before it does and lift it.

  • Picking at haze or edges

Leave them alone while the film cures. Moisture works its way out on its own. Anything still there at your check-up, we’ll handle.

  • A pressure washer up close or at an edge

Keep the nozzle at least 3 feet from the film and never aim it at an edge. Up close, the spray can lift it.

  • Automatic car washes

Spinning brushes and cloths grind grit into the film and can catch an edge and lift it. Touchless washes blast high-pressure water at the edges with harsh soaps. Hand wash instead.

  • Abrasive polishes and solvents

Polishes with abrasives, petroleum, or solvents can haze or damage the film’s top layer. Gas spills? Wipe them off right away.

  • Carnauba wax

Natural carnauba waxes can stain and yellow film. If you use a wax or sealant, pick a synthetic one and try it on a small spot first.

  • Bugs and droppings that bake on

The film protects your paint, but the film itself can stain. Wipe them off as soon as you can, especially in the Florida sun.

Good to know

What to expect from your film

Old chips still show

Film stops new chips. Chips that were already in the paint still show through, and we point them out at drop-off.

Edges can collect dirt

We wrap every edge the car allows. Where an edge can’t be wrapped, a little dirt can build up over time, most on light-colored cars. Regular washing and a coating keep it clean.

It’s a shield, not armor

Film takes the hits so your paint doesn’t. A big impact or anything sharp that cuts through the film can still reach the paint.

Coating on top helps

A ceramic coating over the film keeps it glossy, slick, and resistant to staining, and makes every wash easier.

Questions

PPF care questions

Not sure if what you’re seeing is normal? Call or text (352) 251-2008, or stop by. We’ll take a look even if we didn’t install your film.

See our PPF packages
How long after PPF install can I wash my car?

Wait 2 weeks. We want the glue to fully grab the paint before the first wash. After that, hand wash with a pH-neutral car soap and a soft mitt, and keep a pressure washer at least 3 feet away and off the film edges.

How long does PPF take to cure?

Plan on 2 weeks before the first wash so the glue can fully grab the paint. Any leftover moisture under the film keeps working its way out after that, and the film is fully cured in about 3 to 4 weeks, faster in warm, sunny weather.

Why does my new PPF look hazy or have small bubbles?

That’s normal. It’s leftover install solution between the film and the paint, and it evaporates out as the film cures, faster in warm weather. Faint marks in the adhesive settle and disappear over time too. Don’t push on it or pick at it. If anything is still there at your check-up, we take care of it.

Will the bubbles in my PPF go away?

Small water bubbles after install usually do. They’re install solution, and they evaporate out through the film over the first few weeks. Bubbles that are still there after a month, or that look like trapped air or dirt, won’t go away on their own. Have the shop that installed it look at them at your check-up.

Can I take a car with PPF through an automatic or touchless car wash?

We don’t recommend it. Brush and cloth washes grind grit into the film and can catch an edge and lift it, and touchless washes blast high-pressure water at the edges with harsh soaps. Hand washing is the way to keep film looking its best.

What is the best soap for washing PPF?

Any pH-neutral car shampoo without waxes or harsh cleaners added. We use CARPRO Reset. Skip dish soap, degreasers, and all-purpose cleaners. They strip any coating or sealant on top of the film and can leave residue along the edges.

How do I wash a car with PPF and ceramic coating?

The same way you wash a coated car: pre-soak, a pH-neutral soap, two buckets, and a soft mitt. The coating makes the film easier to clean, so a gentle wash is all it takes. Our ceramic coating care guide walks through it step by step.

Can I pressure wash paint protection film?

Yes, after the first 2 weeks. Hold the nozzle at least 3 feet from the film, keep it moving, and never aim it at a film edge.

Does PPF really heal scratches?

Light surface scratches and swirl marks in the film’s top layer fade away with heat. Park it in the sun or pour warm water over the spot. Deep cuts that go through the film don’t heal.

Why is there dirt along the edge of my film?

Some edges can’t be wrapped, and over time a little dirt or wax residue can build up along them. It shows most on white and light-colored cars and on partial installs. Dip a cotton swab in 70% isopropyl alcohol and wipe away from the edge, never into it. A ceramic coating over the film helps keep edges clean.

Can I wax or coat my PPF?

Yes, after it cures. Use synthetic products only, never carnauba wax, and try anything new on a small spot first because not every product is safe on film. We recommend a ceramic coating over the film: it keeps the film clean, glossy, and resistant to staining. On matte film, use only products made for matte finishes, never wax or polish.

Will PPF hide rock chips I already had?

No. Film protects what’s there, and chips that were in the paint before install still show through. We point them out at drop-off.

Do I need to come back after my PPF is installed?

Yes. Plan on a check-up with the shop that installed your film 1 to 2 weeks after install. They should look over every edge and panel and fix anything that needs it. Ours is at no charge, and we set the appointment when you pick up.

My film wasn’t installed by you. Can you still look at it?

Yes. Call, text, or stop by, and we’ll help you figure out whether what you’re seeing is normal, even if we didn’t install it.
