BMW X5 hood with ceramic coating over paint protection film
From a CARPRO certified shop

Ceramic coating vs PPF

They get compared like two versions of the same thing, but they do different jobs. Paint protection film stops rock chips. Ceramic coating stops bird droppings, bug acid, and water spots, and makes washing easy. Here is how to tell which one your car needs, and when it makes sense to do both.

The short answer

Worried about rock chips? Get paint protection film. A coating can’t stop a rock.

Tired of bird droppings, lovebugs, and water spots, or of washing all weekend? Get a ceramic coating.

Drive the highway and park outside? Do both: film on the front end and a coating over the whole car, film included.

Compare

Side by side

They are not two versions of the same thing. One stops impacts, the other stops chemicals and makes washing easy.
Option 1Ceramic coating
Option 2Paint protection film
Rock chips and road debris
✕No. A coating is far too thin to stop a rock.
Yes. The film takes the hit instead of your paint.
Bird droppings, lovebugs, and water spots
Yes. They wipe off instead of etching in.
~Protects the paint, but the film itself can stain. A coating on top fixes that.
Sun fading
Yes. Slows UV fading and oxidation.
Yes. The film shields the paint from UV.
Light scratches and swirls
~Resists light marring from washing.
Light scratches heal on their own with heat.
Gloss and easy washing
Excellent. Water beads and rolls off.
Glossy and smooth, and just as easy with a coating on top.
How long it lasts
Rated 5 to 10 years, depending on the package
Up to 12 years for clear film, 10 for matte, with proper care
What you see
Nothing but a deep, wet-looking shine
Invisible on most cars. Edges are wrapped wherever the car allows. Matte film turns gloss to satin.
Where it goes
The whole car, plus glass, lights, trim, and wheels
The front end where chips happen, or every painted panel
Time in the shop
1 to 5 days
3 to 5 days
Best for
Bird droppings, lovebugs, water spots, sun, and anyone who wants washing to be easy
Rock chips, road sand, shopping carts, and keeping a new car’s paint like new

The most common setup we install: clear film on the front end, where the chips happen, and a ceramic coating over the whole car, including the film.

Which one fits you

It comes down to how you drive

Where your car lives and where it goes matter more than anything else. Find the card that sounds like you.

Ceramic coating

Pick a coating if:
  • Your car lives in a garage or makes mostly short trips around The Villages
  • Bird droppings, lovebugs, pollen, and sprinkler spots are your biggest headache
  • You want washing to take half the effort
  • Your paint has swirls you want gone first (Showroom Shine starts with paint correction)

Paint protection film

Pick film if:
  • You drive I-75, the Turnpike, or behind dump trucks through construction
  • Your car is new and you want the front end to stay chip-free
  • You plan to sell or trade it and want the paint to look like day one
  • You want a satin look without a repaint (our Full Stealth matte film)

Both

Do both if:
  • Your car is new, expensive, or one you plan to keep for years
  • You drive the highway and park outside
  • You want film where chips happen and easy washing everywhere else
  • You already have film and want it to stay clean and stain-free

Doing both

Film first, coating on top

When a customer does both, the order matters. The film goes down first, on paint that has been washed and decontaminated, with trim removed and edges wrapped wherever the car allows. Then the coating goes over the film and every other surface, including the glass and wheels on Showroom Shine.

The film handles the rocks. The coating keeps the film from staining and makes the whole car rinse clean. That is the setup we put on a 2026 BMW X5 for a customer who asked us exactly this question before her car arrived.

Why Florida changes the answer

Our roads and our sun are hard on paint

Lovebug season hits twice a year, and their remains are acidic enough to etch clear coat if they sit in the sun. Bird droppings do the same, sprinklers leave hard-water spots, and the sun works on parked paint every single day. Those are chemical problems, and a coating is built for them.

Then there are the roads. Construction around Wildwood and The Villages, dump trucks on CR-466 and SR-44, and trips up I-75 or the Turnpike send rocks and sand at the front of your car. That is physical damage, and only film stops it.

That is why so many of our customers end up doing both. Ask us and we will tell you honestly which of these your car actually faces.

Questions

Ceramic coating and PPF questions

Is ceramic coating or PPF better?

Neither is better across the board, because they stop different things. PPF stops rock chips and other physical damage. Ceramic coating stops chemical damage like bird droppings, bug acid, and water spots, and makes washing much easier. The right pick depends on how you drive and where you park.

Does ceramic coating stop rock chips?

No. A coating is a very thin, hard layer, and a rock at highway speed goes right through it. If chips are what you’re worried about, you want paint protection film on the front end.

Can you put ceramic coating over PPF?

Yes, and we recommend it. The film protects the paint, but the film itself can stain from bugs and bird droppings. A coating on top keeps the film clean, glossy, and easy to wash. We did exactly that on a 2026 BMW X5, and wrote up how it went.

Which goes on first, PPF or ceramic coating?

Film first. It goes down on clean, bare paint, then the coating goes over the film and every other surface. If you already have film on your car, we can coat over it.

Do I really need both?

Not always. If your car is garaged and rarely sees the highway, a coating alone may be all you need. If you drive I-75 or the Turnpike often, or the car is new and expensive, film up front plus a coating over everything is the setup most of our customers choose. We will tell you honestly which fits your car.

How long does each one last?

Our ceramic coating packages are rated 5 to 7 years for Shine & Protect and 7 to 10 years for Showroom Shine. Clear paint protection film is rated up to 12 years and matte film up to 10, with proper care. We walk you through the care routine at pickup.

Which one costs more?

Film usually costs more, because every piece is cut and installed by hand, and full-car film is the biggest investment of all. Your price depends on your car and the package, so we quote from your year, make, and model, and you know the price before you drop off.

How long will my car be at the shop?

A coating takes 1 to 5 days depending on the package, and film usually takes 3 to 5 days. If you do both, we schedule them back to back and give you the exact timeline with your quote. We cover a one-way Uber or Lyft, and your car is under 24/7 video surveillance the whole time.

Is PPF worth it in The Villages?

If you drive out of The Villages often, usually yes. Highway runs, construction zones, and trucks on CR-466 and SR-44 throw a lot of rocks, and a chip never heals. If you mostly drive the golf cart and the car stays in the garage, a coating may be all you need.
