The Downsides of Ceramic Coating: An Honest Answer

What ceramic coating won't do, what it asks of you, and why do-it-yourself kits don't last like a shop coating. The honest version, from a coating shop.

The Downsides of Ceramic Coating: An Honest Answer

Ceramic coating is great at one job: keeping your paint glossy and easy to clean for years. The main downsides are that it won't stop rock chips, it still needs to be washed, and it needs a week to cure before soap. It also costs more up front than wax. Here's each one, plainly, so you know what you're buying.

It won't stop rock chips

A coating is a thin, hard layer bonded to your paint. It makes the surface slick and resistant to stains, but it's far too thin to absorb a rock coming off a truck tire. If chips on the hood and bumper are your worry, that's what paint protection film is for. Many of our customers put film on the front of the car and coat everything, film included. Our ceramic coating vs PPF guide walks through the difference.

You still have to wash it

A coated car gets dirty like any other car. The difference is that dirt, pollen, and lovebugs let go with a rinse and a gentle wash instead of a scrub. You'll wash less often and spend less time doing it, but you'll still wash. We show you the routine at pickup, and our ceramic coating care guide covers it step by step.

It's not scratch-proof

Coatings resist light marring better than bare clear coat, but no coating makes paint scratch-proof. A gritty sponge, a dirty towel, or a brush car wash can still leave marks. Washing it the right way keeps the finish looking new for years.

Water spots can still happen

Hard water and sprinkler water leave minerals behind when they dry. On a coated car they're easier to remove, but if spots bake on in the Florida sun for days, they can still etch. A quick rinse and dry after the sprinklers hit it avoids most of this.

It needs a week to cure

Rain is fine after the first 4 hours, but hold off on soap, car washes, and any chemicals for 7 days while the coating finishes hardening. For most people that's an easy week, but it's worth planning around a road trip or a car show.

It costs more up front than wax

Wax lasts a few weeks and a sealant a few months. Our coatings are rated 3 to 10 years depending on the package, so you pay once instead of over and over. It's more up front, but you're buying years of protection and much easier washes. Our ceramic coating cost guide explains what goes into the price.

Can I apply ceramic coating myself?

You can buy consumer coatings and sprays, and some of them are decent for a season or two. What makes a shop coating last is everything around the bottle: a full wash and decontamination, a clean panel wipe so the coating can bond, a controlled bay with no dust or sun, and leveling every panel before it flashes. Done wrong, a coating leaves "high spots" that harden into dark smears, and those have to be polished off by machine. That's the most common call we get from people who tried it at home.

Our top package, Showroom Shine, uses CARPRO Finest Reserve, and we're a certified Finest Reserve shop.

Is ceramic coating worth it in Florida?

For most cars here, yes. Sun, lovebugs, sprinkler water, and pollen are hard on paint, and a coating makes all of it easier to deal with while helping the finish stay glossy. Just know what it is and isn't: a long-lasting, easy-to-clean layer, not armor.
